Yasuki Kobayashi

Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Champion RED Editorial Department, Akita Shoten Co., Ltd. In addition to "8 Man VS Cyborg 009" serialized in the same magazine, he is in charge of reboot works of many famous manga.

◆ Impression that the teacher's work had a stronger impact as a work than as a picture

You have no acquaintance with Professor Ishinomori in the first place, right?

face_kobayashi

Not. You didn't make it in time (to meet by the time you died). I have never seen it.

So what was your first contact with Ishimori Productions?

face_kobayashi

Why was it "immigrant edition"?

face_kobayashi

I liked "Immigration" and "Immigration" is a serialization of "Adventure King" published by our company. So, if you have roots. "Immigration" is an episode that has a romantic punch line and also has a lot of modern elements, so I came to ask for a moment.
It didn't happen at that time, but as the days went by, I was able to meet Dr. Masato Hayase in another case, and it became a story that "009" could be done in a new form. While I was consulting, the name of Professor Tsuguo came out, so I was wondering what kind of shape it should be. The detailed story about that is as in the interview with Professor Okazaki the other day.

What was the first encounter with Professor Ishinomori's work?

face_kobayashi

After all, my favorite is "009".

face_kobayashi

I agree. "009" is also remarkable, but Professor Ishinomori draws an awareness of the problems of the times. Isn't it a generation of teachers who strongly possessed such things? Right now, there aren't many works made like that, in fact. Is it the age of sensitivity? It's not that bad, of course, but there are places where it is very important to be able to ride or not, while Professor Ishinomori, the teachers of the Tokiwa-so generation, and the people around them I feel like I'm digging deeper into the theme of the times, and I'm really attracted to that.

Do you have any other favorite Ishinomori works?

face_kobayashi

By the way, what was the hardest part to find? (Lol)

face_kobayashi

Oh! Did you find it?

face_kobayashi

It's amazing (laughs).

face_kobayashi

I also collected "Play Comic", which Professor Ishinomori drew on the cover for a while. I think we had all the volumes from the first issue to about 50 issues. However, I have the impression that Professor Ishinomori had a stronger impact as a work than as a picture.
The image of each work is stronger than the frame or the picture alone. With the works of other writers, I often feel that I don't remember the story and remember it from the impact of the picture, but Ishinomori's work has many patterns that remember the story firmly, that is, I am very attracted to the story. I think it was. Also, the character settings are outstandingly good. The background and back story are amazing.

◆ From the editor's point of view, Professor Ishinomori as a producer was really a genius.

What is Kobayashi-san's work in charge of "Champion RED" other than "009"?

face_kobayashi

Masato Hayase's "8 Man VS Cyborg 009", Yuzuru Shimazaki's "Galaxy Railroad 999 ANOTHER STORY Ultimate Journey", J-ta Yamada's "Eko Eko Azarak REBORN", Chimaki Kuori's "Saint Seiya Saintia Sho" , And "Soseki and Rinatsu Mummy Murder Case" by Dr. Koichi Shimaboshi. There are a lot of reboots of old works.
It's hard to create a super character. There is a place where I think that drawing and connecting such super characters may actually be the term of Japanese manga nowadays, and Marvel and DC have been doing that all the time. I think it may be my current mission to create characters and works that I love and want to connect to the next era.

There are also difficulties in dealing with big titles and super characters, right?

face_kobayashi

After all, I think that you can't do it unless you like it. I think there is a point. Isn't it hard to deceive? Isn't it useless if you don't understand the core part? So what is the core of "009"? What is the core of "Galaxy Railroad 999"? What if "Saint Seiya"? I'm doing it while thinking about that.
I always feel the pressure that I can't do bad things. It is a premise that neither the work itself nor the writer teacher should be rude, and I think that it is useless even if it becomes a mere business. Business plus α, of course, you have to become a business, but how much heat you can have plus α.
For example, there is no point in spoiling Okazaki-sensei's authorship as to how to make the best use of Okazaki-sensei's authorship while not losing the goodness of the work of "009". I really wonder what kind of things can bring out the best of Okazaki-sensei.

Did the view of Ishinomori's work change between reading as a reader and a fan and reading as an editor?

face_kobayashi

I agree. From the editor's point of view, I think Professor Ishinomori as a producer was really a genius. Of course, I'm a genius as a manga artist, but I think the person who can demonstrate his abilities as a producer is quite special as a writer.
The concept and work of "009" will be completely different depending on the time, and it will be arranged according to the times. Is it to fit the newness? It's not as easy as incorporating newness. Editors have a fear of something new. Is it okay to incorporate newness into what was originally popular? Is it okay to change it anew? I don't feel that kind of fear from Professor Ishinomori at all. Rather, it feels like there is no point in doing the same thing.

face_kobayashi

That's right ... Is difficult…….

Is "Champion RED" a new work of "009"?

face_kobayashi

But that's not interesting, isn't it? As an editor, it's kind of like going to ask for something that other people might ask (laughs). I think everyone will probably ask.
I wonder what it is. … Maybe it's from a chat. Don't go for it. What are you interested in right now? You might talk about things that you don't know if it will lead to manga, and tell you that things that don't become manga will become manga. I think Professor Ishinomori can do things that you wouldn't normally do. I might ask for such a changing ball.
Or, I wanted to throw a mundane project and see how Mr. Ishinomori would cook it, and what kind of work it would be with a plus α. I think Professor Ishinomori wasn't trying to make ordinary things into ordinary things, but rather putting in ordinary things and then riding on something completely different.
I really wanted to see you.
